Seven well-known scholars and artists - namely:

- Liu Liang - drinking wine.
- Xiang Xiu - sleeping.
- Xi Kang - playing the qin.
- Ruan Ji - whistling.
- Shau Tao - drinking wine; and
- Wang Rong - balancing a ruyi (wand);
who all lived around Loyang in the period 210 - 307 - engaging themselves in these pursuits, which included "pure conversation".
清談 qingtan: "clear talk" or "pure conversation".
